SAT vs LCAT for LUMS: Which Test Should You Take?

LUMS accepts the SAT, the ACT or its own LCAT, and you only need one. Here's how they compare on format, cost, dates and score rules, and how to pick the right one for you.

Every LUMS undergraduate applicant must take one admission test. LUMS gives you three choices: the SAT, the ACT, or its own LUMS Common Admission Test (LCAT). Most students in Pakistan take the LCAT, but the SAT is a real alternative, and for some students it's the better one.

This guide compares the tests on the things that matter: format, timing, cost, how LUMS treats your scores, and which suits which kind of student.

Quick answer

  • You need only one test: SAT, ACT or LCAT. LUMS's admission FAQ says this applies to all four schools.
  • LUMS sets no minimum SAT or ACT score.
  • If you take the SAT or ACT more than once, you must report every attempt. LUMS considers your best single attempt, not a combination of section scores.
  • The SAT deadline falls after the LCAT. For Fall 2026, the LCAT was on 15 February, and the deadlines to take the SAT and ACT were 14 March and 11 April.
  • The LCAT is cheaper and held in Pakistan once a cycle. The SAT costs more, is taken on a computer, and can be retaken several times a year.
  • The content overlaps heavily. LUMS describes the LCAT as "a multiple-choice test like the SAT", and its eight content domains use the Digital SAT's domain names.

LUMS doesn't publish the LCAT's question count, scoring scale or negative-marking rule. It says LCAT scores are valid for one academic year and aren't disclosed to applicants. The SAT and ACT details are general; check collegeboard.org and act.org for current dates and fees in Pakistan.

How LUMS treats SAT and ACT scores

These rules come from LUMS's admission FAQ:

  • No minimum score. LUMS says there's no minimum SAT or ACT score requirement. Your test is assessed with the rest of your application.
  • Report all attempts. You must report the scores of all your SAT or ACT attempts, through the online application and by submitting your score reports.
  • Best single attempt counts. If you take the test more than once, LUMS considers the best score from a single sitting. Unlike some universities abroad, it doesn't "superscore" by combining your best sections from different dates.
  • Online scores are accepted if your official report hasn't arrived in time. Submit a printed copy of your online scores.

Whichever test you take, it's one part of a holistic assessment. Our guide on how LUMS decides admission explains the rest.

Dates: the SAT gives you a second chance

The Fall 2026 calendar shows how the deadlines fit together:

MilestoneFall 2026 date
Online application deadline27 January 2026
LCAT15 February 2026
Deadline to take the SAT14 March 2026
Deadline to take the ACT11 April 2026

Two things follow from this:

  1. You apply before you test. The application closed before the LCAT, and before the SAT and ACT deadlines.
  2. The SAT is a backup after the LCAT. If your LCAT goes badly, you can still sit the SAT before the March deadline in the same cycle. You'd need to have planned and registered for it in advance, though.

LUMS hasn't published its Fall 2027 undergraduate dates yet. Follow our LCAT 2027 dates and deadlines post for updates.

Which test suits you?

Choose the LCAT if...

  • You're applying only in Pakistan. The LCAT is built for local applicants, held in Pakistan and much cheaper.
  • You're comfortable doing maths by hand. The calculator ban is the LCAT's biggest difference.
  • You want one focused attempt. The LCAT sits neatly inside the LUMS calendar.

Choose the SAT if...

  • You're also applying abroad. One SAT score can go to LUMS and to foreign universities.
  • You want more than one attempt. The SAT runs several times a year, and LUMS considers your best single sitting.
  • You rely on a calculator. The SAT allows one in Math.
  • You're an A-Level or international student already preparing for the SAT.

The ACT

The ACT is accepted on the same terms as the SAT. It's less common in Pakistan. Consider it only if you're already preparing for it for other universities.

LUMS Fall 2026 test deadlines: application 27 January, LCAT 15 February, last SAT 14 March, last ACT 11 April. Take the LCAT if applying only in Pakistan, comfortable doing maths by hand and wanting one low-cost attempt; take the SAT if also applying abroad, wanting more than one attempt or relying on a calculator
You need one test. The SAT deadline falls a month after the LCAT, which gives you a backup.

Can you take both?

Yes, as long as you meet the deadlines. Some students register for the LCAT and also plan an SAT sitting before the SAT deadline as a backup. Remember that every SAT attempt must be reported, so only sit the SAT when you're ready.

Preparing for either test

The good news: preparation transfers. LUMS's own LCAT sample guide recommends SAT practice tests and Khan Academy. The skills are the same: reading carefully, grammar rules, algebra, data interpretation and geometry.

The main adjustments:

  • For the LCAT, practise maths without a calculator from day one, and pace yourself in 40-minute sections.
  • For the SAT, get used to the digital, adaptive format and the on-screen calculator.

Our LCAT preparation guide has 30, 60 and 90-day plans, and our LCAT Math and Verbal sections guide has worked examples. You can practise with 15 full-length LCAT mocks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does LUMS accept the SAT instead of the LCAT?

Yes. LUMS asks every undergraduate applicant to take one admission test: the SAT, the ACT or the LUMS Common Admission Test (LCAT). You only need one of them.

What SAT score do I need for LUMS?

LUMS says there is no minimum SAT or ACT score requirement. Your test score is assessed together with the rest of your application, so a higher score helps, but there's no published cut-off.

Does LUMS superscore the SAT?

No. LUMS's admission FAQ says you must report the scores of all your SAT or ACT attempts, and it considers the best score from a single attempt. It doesn't combine your best sections from different dates.

Can I take the SAT if my LCAT goes badly?

Yes, if you plan ahead. In the Fall 2026 cycle, the LCAT was on 15 February and the deadline to take the SAT was 14 March, so an SAT sitting after the LCAT still counted. You'd need to register for the SAT in advance, and every SAT attempt must be reported.

Is the LCAT easier than the SAT?

Neither is simply easier. The content overlaps heavily: LUMS calls the LCAT a multiple-choice test like the SAT, and its eight content domains use the Digital SAT's domain names. The biggest difference is that the LCAT doesn't allow a calculator and is on paper, while the SAT is digital and allows a calculator in Math.

Next steps

The test options, score rules and deadlines are from LUMS's admission FAQ and its admissions calendar for the Fall 2026 cycle. The LCAT format is from LUMS's official sample guide and the LCAT Guidelines on its programme pages. The LCAT fee is from LUMS's document checklist, which doesn't say which cycle it applies to. All were checked on 7 October 2026. SAT and ACT details change, so confirm them with College Board and ACT.
