NUST NET Series 1, 2, 3 or 4: Which Should You Take?
NUST runs four NET series a year and counts only your best score, so the real question isn't which series is easiest. It's how to use more than one. Here are NUST's rules on attempts, the claim that NET-1 is easier, and a series plan for each kind of student.

"Which NET should I give?" is one of the most common questions NUST applicants ask. Should you go early in November, wait for the spring series, or save yourself for the last one in summer?
NUST's own rules answer most of it. Only your best score counts, so a series you take isn't a risk to your merit. The better question is how many series to take, and which ones fit your board exams, your city and your preparation.
The rules below are from NUST's admissions pages, checked on 2 October 2026.
Quick answer
- NUST counts your best NET score from all the series you take in a cycle. A weak attempt never pulls you down.
- You can take each NET only once per series, and each series needs its own Rs. 5,000 registration.
- NUST doesn't say any series is easier. It says all tests share the same pattern and standard, and the NET covers both FSc Part I and Part II.
- For most FSc students, two attempts make sense: an early one (Series 1 or 2) and a later one (Series 3 or 4) once more of the course is done.
What NUST's rules say about attempts
| Rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| Candidates can appear in NET more than once, and the best score is used for merit | Every extra attempt can only help your merit |
| Only one attempt per discipline in any one series | You can't resit NET-Engineering twice in Series 1, but you can sit it again in Series 2 |
| Each series needs a separate form and fee (Rs. 5,000) | Four attempts cost Rs. 20,000 in total |
| A NET result is valid only for the current admission cycle | A NET-2027 score counts for Fall 2027 only |
| Missed sessions aren't normally rescheduled | Pick a date you're sure about |
NUST picks the best score automatically. You don't choose which attempt to submit.
Different NETs in the same series: the one-attempt rule is per discipline. A Pre-Medical student can sit NET-Engineering and NET-Applied Sciences in the same series. For programmes like BS Bioinformatics and BS Food Science, NUST takes the better of the two.
Is NET-1 easier than NET-4?
Many students believe NET-1 is the easiest series and NET-4 the hardest. The usual explanation is that early series lean on the first-year course, because second-year students haven't finished Part II by November.
NUST has never said this. Its FAQ says the NET is based on SSC and HSSC studies, Part I and Part II, and that the computer-based and paper-based tests share the same pattern and standard. Nothing on NUST's pages says question difficulty or syllabus coverage changes by series.
So treat "NET-1 is easier" as a rumour, not a plan. Prepare the whole FSc course for every series. Questions on Part II topics like Integration or Current Electricity can appear in any series.
There's one real difference between early and late series: your own preparation. In November you've had less time to study the Part II course, and by July you've finished it. That matters far more than any difference between papers.
How the four series fit the school year
| Series | Registration | Test | Where | Where you are in the year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Series 1 | 4 Oct to 14 Nov 2026 | 17 Nov 2026 onwards | Islamabad only | Early second year, Part II partly done |
| Series 2 | Dec 2026 to Jan 2027 | Jan to Feb 2027 (Islamabad), Mar 2027 (Quetta, Karachi) | 3 cities | Part II mostly covered, sendups and prelims |
| Series 3 | Feb to Mar 2027 | Apr 2027 | Islamabad only | Close to HSSC board exams for many boards |
| Series 4 | Apr to May 2027 | Jun to Jul 2027 (Islamabad), Jul 2027 (Quetta, Karachi, Gilgit) | All 4 cities | After board exams, full course done |
Series 2 to 4 have month ranges only, because NUST calls its NET-2027 schedule tentative. See our NET-2027 dates guide for updates.
HSSC board exam dates vary by board. Check your board's date sheet before you book Series 3 or Series 4, so a NET session doesn't land in your exam weeks.
Which series plan fits you?
FSc second-year student in Islamabad or Rawalpindi
Take Series 1 or 2 as your first attempt, then Series 4 (or 3) as your main one.
An early attempt shows you the real computer-based test and gives you a baseline score. Computer-based results come out within 24 hours. Then put your board exams first and come back for Series 4 with the full course done. If your early score is already strong, the later attempt is a bonus, not a must.
Student outside Islamabad
Plan around Series 2 and Series 4. These are the only series held in Quetta and Karachi (Series 2) and in Quetta, Karachi and Gilgit (Series 4). Series 1 and 3 are Islamabad only. If you can travel, those are extra chances. If you can't, two attempts is still a solid plan.
Gap-year or repeat student
Go early and go often. You've already finished FSc, so you aren't waiting on the Part II course. NUST says gap-year candidates face no penalty in merit. Series 1 lets you lock in a score early, and later series give you room to improve it.
A Level student
Same logic as FSc, but check your exam session. If you're in your final A Level year, NUST works out your merit from your IBCC O Level equivalence. Avoid a NET date in the middle of your Cambridge exams.
Pre-Medical student applying for Engineering
Sit NET-Engineering, and plan the Mathematics course too. If you didn't take additional Maths, NUST requires its online 8-week Mathematics course with at least 60%, completed before 25 July 2027. Don't leave both for the summer. An early NET attempt plus the course in spring is easier than cramming both after your board exams.
Is it worth taking all four?
Usually not. Each attempt costs Rs. 5,000 and a day of travel and nerves. A retake without any new preparation in between is unlikely to move your score much.
A better rule: only take another series when you've done something since the last one that should move your score, like finishing a weak topic, practising full papers under time, or fixing your English. Between attempts, look at which subjects lost you the most marks and work on those.
Planning tips
- Register early in each window. Computer-based candidates choose a test date and session when they register, and paper-based slots are first come, first served.
- Keep your preferences in mind. If you've already sat an earlier series, NUST lets you update your programme preferences when you apply for Series 4 or after the merit list is announced.
- Keep one login. Use the same account on ugadmissions.nust.edu.pk for every series, so all your scores sit together for merit.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which NUST NET series is the easiest?
NUST has never said any series is easier. Many students believe NET-1 is easier because it falls before second year is finished, but NUST says the NET is based on SSC and HSSC Part I and Part II, and that its tests share the same pattern and standard. Prepare the full FSc course for every series.
Does NUST take the best or the latest NET score?
The best. NUST says candidates can appear in NET more than once to improve their score, and the system picks the best score for merit generation automatically. A weaker later attempt does not replace a stronger earlier one.
Can I take the NUST NET twice in the same series?
No. NUST allows only one attempt for a particular discipline in any one series. You can sit the same NET again in a later series, and you can sit different NETs, such as NET-Engineering and NET-Applied Sciences, in the same series.
Which NET series are held outside Islamabad?
Under NUST's tentative NET-2027 schedule, Series 2 is also held in Quetta and Karachi (March 2027), and Series 4 in Quetta, Karachi and Gilgit (July 2027). Series 1 and Series 3 are held in Islamabad only.
Should I take all four NET series?
Usually not. Each attempt costs Rs. 5,000 and only your best score counts. For most FSc students two attempts make sense: an early one (Series 1 or 2) for a baseline, and a later one (Series 3 or 4) once more of the course is done. Take another series only after you have worked on what cost you marks last time.
