ECAT is 100 MCQs in 100 minutes. Ten are English, and the other 90 are split equally across your three subjects. Each correct answer is worth four marks, and there is no negative marking.

Quick answer

  • Questions: 100 MCQs
  • Time: 100 minutes, about one minute a question
  • Marks: 4 per correct answer, so the paper is out of 400
  • Negative marking: none
  • Passing mark: none
  • Level: Intermediate (FSc)

The paper for Pre-Engineering students

Most engineering applicants take the Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry combination:

SectionMCQsMarks
Physics30120
Mathematics30120
Chemistry30120
English1040
Total100400

The five combinations

UET offers ECAT in five subject combinations. Pick the one that matches your Intermediate subjects:

  1. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
  2. Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science
  3. Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science
  4. Biology, Physics, Chemistry
  5. Mathematics, Statistics, Physics

English is in every combination. DAE students can only choose Physics, Mathematics and English with either Chemistry or Computer Science.

What the syllabus is

UET says the test is "of Intermediate level". There's no separate ECAT syllabus to buy: it's your FSc Part-I and Part-II books.

In our seven ECAT past papers, the most-tested chapters were:

  • Physics: Motion and Force, Waves, Electronics, Alternating Current, Current Electricity
  • Mathematics: Trigonometry, Differentiation, Functions and Limits, Integration, Matrices and Determinants
  • Chemistry: Liquids and Solids, Electrochemistry, p-Block Elements, Atomic Structure, Solutions
  • English: grammar and usage, a reading passage, vocabulary

These counts come from our papers, not from UET. The full breakdown is in ECAT past papers: what repeats.

No negative marking changes your strategy

A wrong answer costs nothing. So never leave a question blank. If you can rule out even one option, your guess gets better. In the last minute, fill in anything you've skipped.

Timing

One minute a question sounds tight, and for Mathematics and Physics numericals it is. Chemistry theory and English usually take less. Bank time there, then spend it on the calculations.

Calculators aren't allowed, so practise arithmetic by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ECAT paper pattern?

100 MCQs in 100 minutes. Ten are English and the other 90 are split equally across your three subjects, so the Pre-Engineering paper is Physics 30, Mathematics 30, Chemistry 30 and English 10.

How many marks is ECAT out of?

400. Each correct answer is worth 4 marks and there are 100 questions.

Is there negative marking in ECAT?

No. UET says there is no negative marking and no passing threshold, so you should answer every question.

What is the ECAT syllabus?

UET says the test is of Intermediate level, so the syllabus is your FSc Part-I and Part-II books for the subjects in your chosen combination, plus English.
