ECAT vs NUST NET: Which Engineering Test Is Harder?
UET's ECAT and NUST's NET both decide engineering seats, but they're built differently. ECAT has Chemistry and counts for 33% of merit; NET has no Chemistry and counts for 75%. Here's the comparison.

ECAT is 100 MCQs in 100 minutes and includes Chemistry. NUST NET-Engineering is 200 MCQs in 180 minutes with no Chemistry.
The bigger difference is weight: NET is 75% of NUST merit, but ECAT is 33% of UET merit.
Quick answer
| UET ECAT | NUST NET-Engineering | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 100 | 200 |
| Time | 100 minutes | 180 minutes |
| Subjects | Physics 30, Maths 30, Chemistry 30, English 10 | Maths 100, Physics 60, English 40 |
| Negative marking | None | None |
| Share of merit | 33% | 75% |
| Attempts | More than one, best score counts | NET-1 to NET-4 series |
Pace: ECAT is faster
ECAT gives you one minute a question. NET gives you 54 seconds a question, but over three hours. ECAT is a sprint; NET is a long test where concentration matters.
Subjects: Chemistry is the big split
ECAT's Pre-Engineering paper gives Chemistry the same 30 questions as Physics and Maths. NET-Engineering has no Chemistry at all, but half the paper is Mathematics.
If Chemistry is your strong subject, ECAT rewards it. If Maths is, NET rewards it more.
Merit: where each test counts more
| UET | NUST | |
|---|---|---|
| Matric | 17% | 10% |
| Intermediate | 50% (Part-I) | 15% |
| Entry test | 33% (ECAT) | 75% (NET) |
At UET, your FSc Part-I marks carry half your merit. At NUST, the test decides most of it. A student with strong board marks has a head start at UET. A student with average marks can catch up more at NUST.
Which is harder?
Neither is harder for everyone. NET has more questions and a heavier Maths load. ECAT is shorter and faster, and adds Chemistry. Many students sit both.
Preparing for both
The overlap is large: FSc Physics, Maths and English. A plan for both:
- Build Maths and Physics first. Both tests need them.
- Keep Chemistry going for ECAT.
- Practise each test's real format: ECAT's 100-minute sprint and NET's 3-hour paper.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between ECAT and NUST NET?
ECAT is 100 MCQs in 100 minutes with Physics, Maths, Chemistry and English. NET-Engineering is 200 MCQs in 180 minutes with Maths 100, Physics 60 and English 40, and no Chemistry.
How much does ECAT count compared with NET?
ECAT is 33% of UET's aggregate. NET is 75% of NUST's aggregate.
Does NUST NET have Chemistry?
No. NET-Engineering tests Mathematics, Physics and English only.
Can I prepare for ECAT and NET together?
Yes. Both test FSc Physics, Maths and English. Add Chemistry for ECAT and practise each test's real length and timing.
Practise both
- UET ECAT past papers: seven full 100-question papers.
- NUST NET past papers and NET mock tests: full 200-question papers.
- Compare your merit with the UET and NUST aggregate calculators.
