Backup Plan Strategy: Which Universities to Apply to Besides Your Dream Choice

One dream university is not a plan. Build a list with reach, match and safe choices, spread across tests held at different times of year. Here's how, with the 2026 test calendar and backup routes for medical, engineering and computing students.

Every year, strong students end up without a seat because they applied to one university and hoped. Their test went badly, the merit closed a point above them, or a form detail went wrong. By the time they knew, every other deadline had passed.

A backup plan doesn't mean you've given up on your dream choice. It means one bad day can't cost you a whole year. This guide shows how to build a balanced list and time it around Pakistan's entry test calendar.

Quick answer

  • Apply to 6 to 9 places in three groups: 2 or 3 reach, 3 or 4 match, and 2 safe choices.
  • Spread your tests across the year. Pakistan's big tests run from November to September, so one bad test day doesn't sink your whole plan.
  • Keep a backup in your own field, like BDS or private MBBS for medicine, or another engineering university for NUST hopefuls.
  • Budget for fees and deposits early. Application fees add up, and some private seats need a large deposit within days.

Reach, match and safe: how to sort your list

Compare your expected aggregate with each programme's recent closing merit:

GroupWhat it meansHow many
ReachYour aggregate is below recent closing merit. You need a strong test day2 or 3
MatchYour aggregate is close to recent closing merit3 or 4
SafeYour aggregate is clearly above recent closing merit, and you'd still be happy to go there2

The last part of "safe" matters. A safe choice you'd never accept isn't a backup. Pick places you'd actually join, in a city and at a fee you can manage.

Closing merits change every year with seats and competition, so treat last year's numbers as a guide, not a promise.

A balanced university list of 6 to 9 applications. Reach, 2 or 3: aggregate below recent closing merit. Match, 3 or 4: aggregate close to recent closing merit. Safe, 2: aggregate clearly above recent closing merit, at a place you would actually join
Sort every option into reach, match or safe by comparing your aggregate with recent closing merit.

The 2026 entry test calendar

The big advantage of a spread-out plan is time. Pakistan's main tests fall at different points in the year. Here's when they were held in the Fall 2026 cycle:

TestFall 2026 cycle timingNotes
NUST NETFour series a cycle. NET-2027 runs November 2026 to July 2027Best score counts. Series 1 tests start 17 Nov 2026
LUMS LCAT15 Feb 2026Held once per cycle. SAT or ACT also accepted
PIEASTwo written tests, 12 Apr and 12 Jul 2026Preferences could be updated after the merit number
UET ECATTwo phases. Phase 2 was 16 to 21 Jun 2026Best of the two phases counted
FAST29 Jun to 10 Jul 2026Own test, SAT or NTS NAT, your choice
GIKI6 to 10 Jul 2026Applications 15 Mar to 15 Jun 2026
MDCAT20 Sep 2026Once a year. Result valid for three years

Fall 2027 dates aren't announced yet, apart from NUST's NET-2027 schedule. Use this table to plan the shape of your year, and check each university's website for the real dates as they're announced. Our guides to NET-2027 dates and LCAT dates are updated as news comes in.

Backup routes by field

If your dream is MBBS

  • Reach: public medical colleges in your province.
  • Match: private medical colleges, which use the same merit formula in Punjab but have their own merit lists.
  • Safe: BDS. The MDCAT pass mark for BDS is 50%, lower than the 55% for MBBS.
  • Related fields: Pharm-D, Doctor of Physiotherapy, Nursing and life sciences. These don't use MDCAT, so check each university's own test and deadline.

In Punjab, UHS runs public and private admissions through separate portals with separate preference lists. You can apply to both. See our public vs private guide.

If you don't get in this year, your MDCAT result stays valid for three years. A retake may still make sense. Our retake guide helps you decide.

If your dream is engineering at NUST

  • Reach: NUST, PIEAS, GIKI.
  • Match: UET through ECAT, FAST, other public engineering universities.
  • Safe: a PEC-accredited programme at a university in your own city.

NUST's four series and ECAT's two phases both count your best score, so these extra attempts are low-risk. Check that every engineering programme on your list is PEC-accredited.

If your dream is Computer Science

  • Reach: NUST, LUMS, FAST's most competitive campuses.
  • Match: FAST's other campuses, COMSATS, other public universities with strong CS departments.
  • Safe: a recognised university in your own city with an NCEAC-accredited programme.

FAST and many others accept NTS NAT or SAT, so one good score can be used at several places. If you have Pre-Engineering or ICS, computer engineering is a strong alternative to CS at many of the same universities. See our computer engineering guide.

If your dream is LUMS

LUMS reviews applications holistically and publishes no cut-off. Even strong applicants can't count on it. Pair it with NUST, FAST and a public university in your city. See how LUMS decides admission.

Budget for fees, deposits and travel

A good list costs money, and some of it comes due fast. Some 2025-26 examples:

  • UHS MBBS/BDS application: Rs. 2,000, non-refundable.
  • NUST NET: Rs. 5,000 per series.
  • LUMS: PKR 11,500 application processing plus PKR 6,500 test registration (local applicants, per LUMS's checklist).
  • Private medical colleges in Punjab: selected candidates had to deposit Rs. 600,000 with UHS within 3 working days of the merit list.

Most application fees are non-refundable, so leave out places you'd never actually join. Plan for travel too, if a test is in another city.

Keep track of everything

With six to nine applications, things slip. Make a simple sheet with one row per university:

UniversityProgrammeTest and dateForm deadlineFee paid?Merit list dateStatus

Check it every week. Note every merit list date and every fee deadline. A missed fee deadline can cancel an offer you've already won.

Mistakes that break a backup plan

  • Applying only after your dream result. By then, many other deadlines have closed.
  • A "safe" list you'd never join. If you'd refuse it, it isn't a backup.
  • Ignoring preference order. On centralised portals like UHS's, your order locks at the deadline, and a college you leave off is never offered.
  • Forgetting to accept an offer while waiting for a better one. Read each university's rules on holding a seat and paying fees.

Our guide to common admission form mistakes covers more of these.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many universities should I apply to?

About 6 to 9, in three groups: 2 or 3 reach choices where your aggregate is below recent closing merit, 3 or 4 match choices where it is close, and 2 safe choices where it is clearly above and you'd still be happy to join.

What is a good backup if I don't get MBBS?

Private medical colleges and BDS are the closest backups. The MDCAT pass mark for BDS is 50%, lower than 55% for MBBS. Related fields like Pharm-D, physiotherapy and nursing don't use MDCAT, so check each university's own test and deadline. Your MDCAT result also stays valid for three years if you decide to retake.

When are the main entry tests held?

In the Fall 2026 cycle the LCAT was on 15 February, PIEAS held tests on 12 April and 12 July, ECAT Phase 2 ran 16 to 21 June, FAST tested from 29 June to 10 July, GIKI from 6 to 10 July, and MDCAT was on 20 September. NUST's NET-2027 runs four series from November 2026 to July 2027. Fall 2027 dates for the others aren't announced yet.

What backups should a NUST engineering applicant consider?

Pair NUST with other reach choices like PIEAS and GIKI, match choices like UET through ECAT and FAST, and a safe PEC-accredited programme in your own city. NUST's four series and ECAT's two phases both count your best score, so extra attempts are low-risk.

How much money should I keep aside for applications?

Fees add up. In the 2025-26 cycle, UHS charged Rs. 2,000 per MBBS/BDS application, NUST Rs. 5,000 per NET series, and LUMS PKR 11,500 plus PKR 6,500 for the test. Private medical colleges in Punjab also needed a Rs. 600,000 deposit within 3 working days of selection.
