Computer Science or Computer Engineering: Which Degree Is Right for You?

CS is mostly software. Computer Engineering mixes hardware and software and makes you a PEC-registered engineer. Here's a short, clear comparison to help you choose.

Choose Computer Science if you want to build software. Choose Computer Engineering if you're curious about how the hardware works too. Both lead to good tech jobs, and many CE graduates end up writing software anyway.

Quick answer

Computer ScienceComputer Engineering
FocusSoftware, algorithms, data, AIHardware and software together
Degree typeComputing (NCEAC)Engineering (PEC)
Usual eligibilityFSc with Maths or ICS; some accept pre-medical with extra MathsFSc Pre-Engineering or ICS
You becomeA computer scientistA registered engineer
Typical first jobsSoftware, data, AIEmbedded, networks, chips, software

What you study

Both degrees share the base: programming, data structures, algorithms, maths and discrete structures.

CS then goes deeper into software: databases, software engineering, operating systems, AI, machine learning, computer theory.

CE adds the hardware side: circuits, electronics, digital logic, microprocessors, computer architecture, embedded systems and chip design. FAST's BS Computer Engineering, for example, needs at least 140 credit hours.

If physics practicals bored you, CS is probably the better fit. If you liked them, CE keeps both doors open.

Eligibility

  • CE usually needs FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS with Physics and Maths. Pre-medical students are often not accepted.
  • CS is more flexible. Some universities accept pre-medical students who clear extra Maths courses.

Check the exact rule for each university before you apply.

Entry tests

The test depends on the university, not the degree:

  • NUST: NET-Engineering for both CS and CE. CS is at SEECS; CE is at SEECS and CoEME.
  • FAST: the FAST test, SAT or NAT. CS uses 50% test weight; CE uses 33%, because it follows PEC's formula.
  • UET: ECAT for CE.

Jobs in Pakistan

Pakistan's IT and IT-enabled services exports hit a record $4.6 billion in FY2025-26, so software jobs are growing for both.

  • CS graduates mostly work as software developers, data analysts and AI engineers, or freelance.
  • CE graduates can do all of that, plus embedded systems, IoT, networking and chip design. Read more in our computer engineering scope guide.

PEC registration

Only CE gives you Pakistan Engineering Council registration. It matters for some government and engineering-sector jobs. For most software companies, it doesn't.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between CS and Computer Engineering?

CS focuses on software, algorithms and AI. Computer Engineering combines hardware and software and leads to PEC registration.

Can a computer engineer work as a software developer?

Yes. Many computer engineering graduates work in software.

Can pre-medical students study CS?

Some universities accept pre-medical students for CS if they pass extra Maths courses. Computer Engineering usually needs Pre-Engineering or ICS.

Which pays more, CS or Computer Engineering?

Pay depends on your skills and role far more than the degree name. Both lead to well-paid tech jobs.

Still unsure?

Ask yourself one question: do you want to understand the chip, or just use it? If "just use it", pick CS.

Whichever you choose, the entry test comes first. Practise with NUST mock tests or FAST past papers, and read how to choose a degree after intermediate.
