The usual path is FSc Pre-Engineering or ICS, then a four-year BS in Computer Science or Software Engineering, then a job or internship. But your degree only gets you the interview. Your skills and projects get you the job.

Quick answer

  1. FSc: Pre-Engineering or ICS (with Maths) keeps every door open.
  2. Entry test: NUST NET, the FAST test, NTS NAT for COMSATS, or ECAT.
  3. Degree: BS Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI or Data Science.
  4. Skills: one language well, data structures, Git, databases, one framework.
  5. Proof: projects on GitHub and at least one internship.

Step 1: Choose the right FSc group

Pre-Engineering or ICS is the safest choice. Most CS and SE programmes want Maths.

Pre-medical? You can still get in at some universities, usually by passing extra Maths courses. Check each university's rule before you apply.

Step 2: Get into a good programme

Your entry test decides where you study. The big ones:

  • NUST: NET-Engineering, 75% of merit. CS, SE, AI and Data Science at SEECS.
  • FAST: FAST test, SAT or NAT. 50% of merit for computing.
  • COMSATS: NTS NAT. CS accepts 50% pre-medical students.

Read our NUST vs FAST for CS comparison and CS vs Computer Engineering if you're still choosing.

Step 3: Learn what the job actually needs

Your degree covers theory. Add these yourself:

  • One programming language, deeply. Python, Java, JavaScript or C++.
  • Data structures and algorithms. Most technical interviews test these.
  • Git and GitHub. Every company uses version control.
  • Databases and SQL.
  • One area: web, mobile, backend, data or AI. Pick one and build in it.

Step 4: Build projects

Recruiters want proof. Build two or three real projects: a web app, a mobile app or a data project that solves an actual problem. Put the code on GitHub with a clear README.

Step 5: Internships and your first job

Aim for an internship after your second or third year. Many Pakistani software houses hire their interns. Use your university's career office, LinkedIn and job fairs.

The market is growing: Pakistan's IT and IT-enabled services exports hit a record $4.6 billion in FY2025-26. Freelancing is another route once you have real skills.

A simple timeline

StageFocus
FScStrong Maths, entry test preparation
BS Year 1-2Programming basics, DSA, first small projects
BS Year 3One specialisation, internship
BS Year 4Final-year project, job applications

Frequently Asked Questions

Which FSc group is best for software engineering?

Pre-Engineering or ICS, since most CS and SE programmes want Maths.

Do I need a degree to become a software engineer?

Most Pakistani companies ask for a BS in CS, SE or a related field. Skills and projects then decide who gets hired.

Which programming language should I learn first?

Python, Java, JavaScript or C++ are all fine. Learning one deeply matters more than which one.

When should I do an internship?

After your second or third year. Many software houses hire their interns.

Start with the entry test

Everything starts with getting into a good programme. Practise with NUST mock tests, FAST past papers or COMSATS past papers.
