NUST vs FAST for Computer Science: Which Should You Pick?

Both NUST and FAST-NUCES are top choices for computer science. NUST's merit is 75% NET; FAST's is 50% test and 40% FSc, with negative marking. Here's how to choose.

For CS, NUST and FAST are both excellent. Pick by how you'd get in: NUST leans almost entirely on NET, while FAST gives your FSc marks 40% of merit.

Fee, city and campus matter next. The degree quality is close.

Merit: test-heavy vs balanced

NUST: a strong NET can carry average board marks, since NET is three quarters of your aggregate.

FAST: your FSc counts for 40%, so good marks give you a real head start. A weak FSc is harder to make up with the test alone.

Run your numbers with our NUST aggregate calculator and read the FAST aggregate formula.

The tests

  • NET-Engineering: 200 MCQs in 180 minutes: Maths 50%, Physics 30%, English 20%. No negative marking, so never leave a blank.
  • FAST test: Advanced Maths, Basic Maths, IQ and English. Wrong answers lose marks, so skip blind guesses.

That makes them feel very different. NET is about speed. FAST is about accuracy and knowing when to skip. See the FAST test pattern.

Campuses and city

FAST runs computing programmes at several campuses, and merit lists are made separately for each campus. That gives you more chances in more cities.

NUST's CS seats are mostly at SEECS in Islamabad, with smaller intakes in Quetta and Karachi.

Fees

NUST's 2026-27 computing tuition is Rs 216,750 a semester, plus Rs 45,000 in one-time charges. FAST is a private, not-for-profit university, and usually costs more. Check FAST's current fee schedule, and compare a full year, not one semester.

Programme choice

Both offer CS, Software Engineering, Data Science and AI. NUST adds Bioinformatics and Information Security. FAST adds a BS in Cyber Security.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is NUST or FAST better for computer science?

Both are excellent. NUST suits students who do well under time pressure in NET. FAST suits students with strong FSc marks, since FSc is 40% of its merit.

Does FAST have negative marking?

Yes. Wrong answers on the FAST test lose marks. NUST NET has no negative marking.

What is the merit formula for CS at NUST and FAST?

NUST: 75% NET, 15% FSc, 10% Matric. FAST computing: 50% test, 40% FSc, 10% Matric.

Can I use the SAT for FAST?

Yes. FAST accepts its own test, the SAT or NTS NAT. You pick one.

Our verdict

  • Choose NUST if you score well under time pressure and want an Islamabad campus with a broad university around you.
  • Choose FAST if your FSc is strong, you want a campus in your own city, or you prefer an accuracy-based test.

Apply to both. Practise NET with NUST mock tests, then switch to FAST past papers closer to FAST's test window.
