There's no "better" choice. MBBS suits students who want to treat patients and can commit to a long training path. Engineering suits students who like maths and building things. Pick the one you'd still want on a bad day.
Quick answer
| MBBS | Engineering | |
|---|---|---|
| FSc group | Pre-Medical | Pre-Engineering (or ICS) |
| Degree length | 5 years + 1-year house job | 4 years |
| Entry test | MDCAT | NUST NET, ECAT, or a university test |
| Pass bar | 55% in MDCAT (99/180) | Varies; NUST and UET rank by aggregate |
| Council | PMDC | PEC |
| Specialisation | Usually several more years | Optional master's |
Study time
MBBS is five years, then a one-year house job. Most doctors then train further to specialise, which can take several more years.
Engineering is four years. You can start work straight after, and a master's is optional.
If you want to be earning by 22, engineering is the faster road.
Entry tests and competition
MDCAT is one national test: 180 MCQs, and you need 55% to be eligible for MBBS. Competition for public seats is intense. Punjab had 4,151 public MBBS seats for 2026-27.
Engineering has many tests: NUST NET (four tries, best counts), UET ECAT (multiple attempts), plus university tests at PIEAS, GIKI, FAST and others. More tests means more chances.
Cost
- Public MBBS is cheap. UHS lists about Rs 53,030 for the first year at Punjab's public colleges.
- Private MBBS is very expensive. See our private medical college fee guide.
- Engineering at NUST costs Rs 216,750 a semester in tuition (2026-27). Private institutes such as GIKI cost about twice that.
Careers
Doctors work in hospitals, clinics and public health, at home or abroad after licensing exams. The job is stable and respected, but the hours are long, especially in training.
Engineers work in software, energy, construction, manufacturing, telecom and more. Software and IT jobs are growing fast: Pakistan's IT exports reached a record $4.6 billion in FY2025-26.
Questions to ask yourself
- Do I like Biology or Maths more? Your FSc subjects already point somewhere.
- Am I ready for 6+ years of training? MBBS is a long commitment.
- Do I want this, or does my family? You'll be the one doing it for 40 years.

Already in Pre-Medical but unsure?
You still have options beyond MBBS. Read our guide to options after MDCAT, and how to choose a degree after intermediate.
Whichever way you go, start practising early: MDCAT past papers or NUST mock tests.
