Pakistan's most competitive engineering universities are NUST, UET Lahore, PIEAS and GIKI, followed closely by NED, FAST and COMSATS. This isn't an official ranking. It's a practical list of where strong students apply, and which test each one needs.
Quick answer
| # | University | City | Entry test |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | NUST | Islamabad + 4 cities | NUST NET |
| 2 | UET Lahore | Lahore | ECAT |
| 3 | PIEAS | Islamabad | PIEAS written test |
| 4 | GIKI | Topi, Swabi | GIKI test |
| 5 | NED UET | Karachi | NED's own test |
| 6 | FAST-NUCES | Several cities | FAST test, SAT or NAT |
| 7 | COMSATS | Several cities | NTS NAT |
| 8 | UET Taxila | Taxila | ECAT |
| 9 | Air University | Islamabad | Its own test |
| 10 | Mehran UET | Jamshoro | Its own test |
1. NUST
The broadest engineering list in the country, from mechanical and electrical to aerospace and naval architecture. Merit: 75% NET, 15% FSc, 10% Matric. See our NUST campuses and programmes guide.
2. UET Lahore
Pakistan's oldest major engineering university, with a huge alumni network. Merit: 33% ECAT, 50% FSc, 17% Matric, so strong board marks help a lot. See the UET merit formula.
3. PIEAS
Small and selective, with six BS programmes in engineering and physics. Merit: 60% test, 25% HSSC Part-I, 15% SSC, and you need at least 60% in both Matric and FSc. Its test includes Chemistry.
4. GIKI
A private, fully residential campus focused on engineering and computing. It runs its own test and doesn't accept ECAT. Fees are high: Rs 470,000 a semester in 2025-26, including accommodation.
5. NED University, Karachi
Karachi's leading public engineering university, with a strong industry name in Sindh. It runs its own admission test, so check ned.edu.pk for the current pattern.
6. FAST-NUCES
Best known for computing, but it also offers Electrical, Civil and Computer Engineering. Engineering merit: 33% test, 50% FSc, 17% Matric. See the FAST aggregate formula.
7. COMSATS
Many campuses and a wide range of programmes. Merit uses the NTS NAT. Engineering asks for 60% in FSc. See COMSATS eligibility.
8-10. UET Taxila, Air University, Mehran UET
All three are respected PEC-accredited options. UET Taxila uses ECAT. Air University and Mehran run their own tests, so check their admission pages each year.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the best engineering university in Pakistan?
NUST, UET Lahore, PIEAS and GIKI are the most competitive. The best one for you depends on your programme, budget and which test suits you.
Which universities accept ECAT?
UET Lahore, UET Taxila and other engineering institutions in Punjab use ECAT. NUST, PIEAS and GIKI run their own tests.
How many entry tests should I take?
Most students take NUST NET, ECAT and one more, such as the FAST or GIKI test. That covers most of the top list.
Why does PEC accreditation matter?
Only a PEC-accredited engineering degree lets you register as an engineer. Check the exact programme, not just the university.
How to pick
- Check PEC accreditation for the exact programme, not just the university.
- Count your tests. NET, ECAT and the FAST test cover most of this list.
- Apply to a mix: a reach, a match and a safe choice. Our backup plan guide shows how.
Start with the test that comes first: NUST mock tests, then ECAT past papers.
