NUST vs UET Lahore: Which Engineering University Should You Choose?
NUST and UET Lahore are Pakistan's two big public engineering universities. NUST admits on NET, UET on ECAT, and the merit formulas pull in opposite directions. Here's how they compare.

NUST rewards a strong entry test. UET rewards strong FSc marks. That one difference should drive your choice more than rankings.
At NUST, NET is 75% of merit. At UET, ECAT is only 33% and FSc is 50%.
Quick answer
| NUST | UET Lahore | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry test | NUST NET | UET ECAT |
| Test format | 200 MCQs, 180 min | 100 MCQs, 100 min |
| Chemistry in test? | No | Yes |
| Merit | 75% NET, 15% FSc, 10% Matric | 33% ECAT, 50% FSc, 17% Matric |
| Negative marking | None | None |
| Retakes | NET-1 to NET-4, best counts | Multiple attempts, best counts |
| Main campus | Islamabad (H-12) | Lahore |
Merit: which formula helps you?
If your FSc is weak, NUST gives you a better chance. A great NET can carry you, because boards are only 25% of the aggregate.
If your FSc is strong, UET works in your favour. Half your merit is already decided by marks you've earned, and ECAT only adds a third.
Try both: the NUST aggregate calculator and our guide to the UET merit formula.
The tests
- NET-Engineering: Maths 50%, Physics 30%, English 20%. No Chemistry. About 54 seconds a question.
- ECAT: Physics 30, Maths 30, Chemistry 30 (or Computer Science), English 10. One minute a question.
Pre-Engineering students sitting both need to keep Chemistry going for ECAT. Our ECAT vs NUST NET comparison covers this in detail.
Campuses and programmes
NUST has schools in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Risalpur, Karachi and Quetta. It offers the usual core engineering degrees plus aerospace, avionics, naval architecture, information security and robotics. See the full list in our NUST campuses and programmes guide.
UET is centred in Lahore, with other campuses in Punjab. It's one of Pakistan's oldest engineering universities, with a wide range of core disciplines and a large alumni network in industry and government.
Fees
NUST's 2026-27 engineering tuition is Rs 216,750 a semester, plus Rs 45,000 in one-time charges. UET's fee depends on the campus and the type of seat, so compare it with UET's current fee notice before you decide.
Campus life
NUST's H-12 campus is large, green and self-contained, with most schools in one place. UET Lahore sits in the city, with a busier, more traditional campus. Both have hostels.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is easier to get into, NUST or UET?
It depends on your marks. NUST's merit is 75% NET, so a strong test helps most. UET's is 50% FSc, so strong board marks help most.
Does UET accept NUST NET?
No. UET admits on ECAT. NUST admits on NET.
Is there Chemistry in NUST NET?
No. NET-Engineering has Maths, Physics and English. ECAT includes Chemistry.
Should I apply to both NUST and UET?
Yes. Both tests cover FSc Physics, Maths and English, and preparing for one helps with the other.
Our verdict
There's no wrong choice between these two. Apply to both. NET-1 starts in November, ECAT comes later, and preparing for one helps with the other.
